alimentos del futuro!
Estamos pidiendo invertir en la transición proteica para convertir a Europa en líder de las proteínas sostenibles, como los alimentos de origen vegetal, la fermentación de precisión y la carne y los lácteos cultivados.
La agricultura animal, la mayor causa de pérdida de biodiversidad del mundo y una de las mayores responsables de la emisión de gases de efecto invernadero, requiere nuestra atención.
Estamos en medio de una nueva revolución tecnológica y alimentaria y este es un momento decisivo para Europa.
Tenemos dos opciones: sumarnos al poder transformador de las nuevas proteínas sostenibles o quedarnos atrás mientras el resto del mundo toma la iniciativa.
Alrededor del 35 % de la tierra habitable del mundo está siendo usada para la ganadería.
La producción sostenible de proteínas es más eficiente que la agricultura tradicional, requiere menos agua, menos cultivos de cereales, menos fertilizantes y menos tierra.
La demanda de carne está poniendo una presión extrema en ecosistemas tan antiguos como el Amazonas
Y la producción de proteínas sostenibles nos ofrece un nuevo camino a seguir. Esta producción sostenible abarca tres áreas cruciales de innovación:

carne y lácteos de origen vegetal,

fermentación de precisión,
-
carne cultivada.
Estas tecnologías innovadoras tienen el potencial de contrarrestar los efectos secundarios negativos de la agricultura animal tradicional a gran escala.
Y, aunque resulte paradójico, se utiliza más cantidad de soja para criar un pollo que para crear un sustituto del pollo.
¿Proteínas sostenibles?
En un mundo que se está enfrentando a desafíos medioambientales urgentes, la llegada de las proteínas sostenibles marca un antes y un después en el camino hacia un sistema alimentario más ético y sostenible.
Esta innovadora fuente de proteínas ofrece alternativas prometedoras a los productos tradicionales de origen animal, reduciendo además el impacto medioambiental y promoviendo así un enfoque más saludable y sostenible de producción de alimentos.
Descubre los tres pilares básicos de la revolución de las proteínas sostenibles: carne de origen vegetal, fermentación de precisión y carne cultivada.
Carne de origen vegetal
Estos productos innovadores, algunos de los cuales están ya en el mercado, están hechos de ingredientes como legumbres, cereales y verduras.
Estas carnes de origen vegetal ofrecen alternativas deliciosas que imitan el sabor, la textura y la composición nutritiva de las carnes y lácteos tradicionales.
Fermentación de precisión
La fermentación de precisión es una tecnología puntera que aprovecha el poder de los microorganismos para elaborar proteínas que son biológicamente idénticas a aquellas que se encuentran en los productos animales.
Y cuenta con antecedentes ya probados de su aplicación en producción a escala mundial de productos esenciales como la insulina, el cuajo, los cítricos o los ácidos.
Carne cultivada
A menudo percibida como el santo grial de las alternativas a la carne, la carne cultivada supone un avance revolucionario en la producción sostenible de proteínas. Mediante un proceso que implica cultivar células animales en un biorreactor, se produce carne real sin necesidad de criar y sacrificar animales.
*También es posible combinar estos enfoques. Por ejemplo, una tira de tocino vegetal podría contener grasas de cerdo fermentadas con precisión para añadir sabor y olor.
La fermentación de precisión, en concreto, es increíblemente prometedora, porque nos permite crear proteínas que son idénticas a las proteínas que se encuentran en la carne y en los productos lácteos.
De la mano de la tecnología microscópica, podemos producir alternativas de origen vegetal que sepan, huelan e incluso se derritan igual que las de origen animal.
Los beneficios de la transición proteica son inmensos.
Sumándonos a la producción sostenible de proteínas podemos reducir hasta en un 92% los efectos que la producción de carne tiene en el clima.
Y desde un punto de vista económico, la implementación total de las proteínas sostenibles en el sector podría suponer un ahorro de 1.1 trillón de dólares y la creación de hasta 9.8 millones de empleos verdes en todo el mundo de aquí a 2050.
Los agricultores contarán ahora con nuevas vías para explorar, desde la producción de ingredientes de origen vegetal hasta la posibilidad de recibir incentivos PES (Ecosystem Services Payments) por emplear sus tierras en la recuperación medioambiental.
Al permitirnos liberar áreas inmensas de tierra dedicadas actualmente a la alimentación del ganado y a la agricultura, esta transición supondrá también una oportunidad sin precedentes para la restauración de la naturaleza y la reducción de la huella de carbono.
¿Moonshot?
Las inversiones Moonshot suponen esfuerzos ambiciosos y revolucionarios que persiguen abordar los principales desafíos sociales empleando tecnologías innovadoras.
Inspiradas en la llegada del Apollo a la Luna, estas inversiones requieren de un compromiso a largo plazo, una financiación considerable y la colaboración entre los sectores público y privado.
Desafiando a la pandemia
Cuando el COVID golpeó el mundo, hubo mucho escepticismo acerca de si sería posible desarrollar una vacuna lo suficientemente rápido. Los gobiernos, las instituciones de investigación y las empresas farmacéuticas invirtieron muchos recursos para ganar tiempo y salvar vidas. Varias vacunas fueron desarrolladas en tiempo record. Estas inversiones moonshot son la prueba del poder que el esfuerzo colectivo tiene a la hora de abordar crisis mundiales urgentes.
Desafiando al cambio climático
Gobiernos y empresas de todo el mundo se han comprometido a invertir recursos en la transición desde los combustibles fósiles hacia las fuentes de energía limpia. Si los avances en tecnologías solar, eólica, nuclear… han sido posibles, ha sido gracias a inversiones moonshot, que han permitido impulsar la innovación y hacer que la energía limpia sea más rentable y accesible para todos.
Mejorando nuestra comprensión del mundo
Las inversiones Moonshot también han jugado un papel muy importante en avanzar en nuestra comprensión del mundo. La llegada a la Luna llevó a desarrollar la tecnología de la información, la tecnología que permitió predecir el clima, la tecnología de la que obtener datos satelitales... Y esas tecnologías han hecho visibles cuestiones hasta ese momento desconocidas como la descomposición de la capa de ozono y el cambio climático. Estas áreas han impulsado avances científicos innovadores a la par que han abordado desafíos, han transformado industrias y, lo que es más importante, han mejorado vidas.
Europa ha sido líder mundial en la transición a las tecnologías de energía limpia. Ahora debe invertir también en las nuevas tecnologías de alimentación sostenible.
Países como Singapur, Canadá, Estados Unidos, Israel, Japón y China están ya liderando el mundo en la investigación, desarrollo y comercialización de proteínas sostenibles.
Es desalentador ver cómo Europa se está quedando atrás, con la mayoría de los estados miembros de la Unión Europea denegando las inversiones públicas e incluso considerando prohibir la carne cultivada.
No podemos arriesgarnos a repetir los errores del pasado, cuando vimos cómo otros prosperaban en otras industrias mientras nosotros nos quedábamos atrás. La revolución de las proteínas es inevitable, está aquí y ahora y ya es una cuestión de seguridad alimentaria fundamental para nuestro continente.
Europa debe recuperar su posición de pionera y debe liderar ya esta revolución alimentaria.

Esta transformación no es posible si no actuamos con urgencia.
Les pedimos que se comprometan a invertir 25.000 millones de euros antes del año 2030, para acelerar el desarrollo y la comercialización de una industria europea de proteínas sostenibles. Esta cifra supone solo el 5 % de los fondos comprometidos en el Green Deal Investment Plan y no es nada en comparación con los fondos públicos que se prevén invertir a través de la Common Agriculture Policy.
